As the jury of the ShowOFF Section of the Krakow Photomonth Festival, this year we decided not be a solo act — as it was up to now, with each member of the jury picking two persons to work with individually later on — but to choose the winners in a joint effort. Our aim was not only to choose eight promising young artists working with lens-based media, but also to make an effort that our choice amount to something more. The perspective of co-curating one exhibition, where the works of the winners could enter into dialogue and recontextualize each other, seemed too seductive. Among the entries we looked for works departing from the personal, but ready to confront the world we live in, experimenting with visual language and at the same time resolved in their formal choices. The works that interested us enter into play with the beholder, implicating her in questions of fiction, myth, and indeterminacy; acknowledging, and at the same time outplaying the world’s ultimate opacity.
